Game Aborted - WHY?!?

Sort:
Joel2718

Why do my games get aborted 5-10 times in a row everytime I try to play Live Chess?

Is this something that is server side?  Seems to either happen within about 5 seconds, or immediately after I make a move.

There are a few reasons to this problem:

  • Your opponent aborted the match [which I highly doubt, since it happened to you one after another].
  • You aborted the match. I doubt this, as well.
  • Internet connection. You might be experiencing technical difficulties?
  • Server problems. As you may already know, Chess.com has been experiencing with live chess and live chess tournaments. Can your problem be a result of their testing?

I'm not so sure about your problem, but I hope these suggestions might help. If you need any more service I suggest contacting a staff member or by reporting the problem.

You can customize settings, but in the new interface it isn't obvious how. On the New Game tab in Play Live Chess, click the link "Game Type Settings".

Hope that helps.

thanks :) i never even knew you could do unrated rofl

Joel2718

maybe they should make it more clear to people

I certainly have no connection problems.

It's like people see my rating and their like screw that (i'm not rated high), or they see my first move 1. d4 and they're like nah I don't want to play against that.

Actually you know what else it might be, i've noticed on several occassions, i've had 5-6 games aborted in a row where I was white, and then after a few minutes of frustration I'm black and the game goes on to be played.

I'm sure some people are pathetic enough to abort games over and over until they play white, but I don't think that most people are. Also I thought the server pretty much forced you to play an equal number of games, but perhaps not.  Because as I said I had many times where 5+ games got aborted and then I was switched to playing black.

@Joel 2718: Clear the cache of your browser. If that doesn't work reboot the browser. If that doesn't work try using a different browser. If that doesn't work try rebooting your PC. Still no luck, contact the management here for assistance.  BTW these suggestions are applicable to most online problems and anomalies regardless of where you are or what you're doing online (or trying to do).

Let us know if and how you solve the problem or if it was a temporary glitch indicating the problem was with chess.com and not originating via your PC, browser or ISP. This info is useful when trying to assist other players here.

How briskly do you play your first move?

Lots and lots of members will abort if your first move isn't made within three seconds or so of the match-up (I suspect they figure, you're not at your PC, why should they wait when they can abort and find someone else).

I always play my first move fast, and its most often immediately after playing my first move that the game gets aborted.  Sometimes I try waiting 5 seconds before making my first move to see if it'll help but it doesn't.  Well hasn't really been happening lately but I also haven't been playing much.  I'm not sure what the probem is.

Does it mostly happen when you have the White pieces?

Joel2718

Actually yes I think it always happens when I'm white.

However, sometimes when I'm playing the black pieces I abort the game, but only if the guy doesn't make his move in the first 5-10 seconds, but this is not until I give them the helpful bit of information that "in the game of Chess, white is supposed to move first, I think".  Of course that's total sarcasm but it pisses me off when I join a game with someone who has no intention of moving.  And as I already said before, when getting all of these aborted games, I always make my move within 1-2 seconds of the board showing up.

Maybe it's possible that their board is loading faster than yours, so what seems like 1 to 2 seconds to you is really 5+ for them...

Hi, I'm new here. Just learning. I notice that the server is pretty fair, alternating between black and white. I play a game until the end. I have experience at times when someone will leave me hanging and wondering if they are having problems with the server or have just quit. I have experiece the members to be fair honest and helpful at times. My question is , is it possible to play higher ranked members, and can anyone join a tournament. Thank you  for any responses, elliot

You can specify a rating range for your opponents, but if you go to high it might be a while before someone accepts your challenge.

For me rated in the low 1600's it seams near impossible get a game with someone over about 1750.

 Hello EJM,

Sometimes people will walk away from a game without actually resigning - in this case you can block them from future games with you.  You can also specify the rating range that you want to play against, as well as other things like time and whether the game is rated or not.  To do this click on "game settings" on the same screen that has the chess board on it....with the chat boxes and stuff.

I have also had games aborted when white either before or after my first move. I assumed it was due to my opponent wanting to play white or to get practice against a different first move. I have just had a game aborted for the first time on about move 25. My opponent was in a better position so I presume it was not him. Any ideas why this might happen?

That could just be your opponent had connection problems.

It is likely that your Internet connection is not fast enough.

This is really frustrating. I was in the end game. Pieces were almost but I was in winning position and then suddenly game gets aborted. I got one call but I cut it off like in 2 seconds only. Is there any way to analyse aborted games in anyway? If yes please tell me.
