Why no longer games as a default option?

This has probably been posted before, but....

Why is the longest option 30 minutes in live-standard?

What about a 45 minute and 60 minute option?

I mean, I know you can enter in custom times, but that makes it much more difficult to find an opponent. Very few people are going to put in the same custom time as you.

It seems odd to me that the only options for live play are quick games. Then you have a huge gap to turn-based chess, which is several days per move.

I would really like to play 45 and 60 minute games, and simply having those as a default option would drastically raise the player pool.

I also found surprising normal FIDE tournament time control options weren't available as pre-set - I mean 40 moves in 2 hours and such, but ...

IMHO, (besides easier computer cheating) with long game running it becomes more probable connection gets disrupted and game vanishes. This would leave customers embittered. There is a difference between 1/20 free blitz games disrupted and 1/2 longer serious games disrupted. I am not familiar with current state, but a few years ago chess.com wasn't suitable online platform for FIDE tempo tournament play.

I don't think it would greatly increase the numbers playing those time controls. People don't play such long time controls because:

  • If you disconnect for one minute at any point you lose, even if you have half an hour left.
  • People in a losing position leave the game to timeout.
  • Not many can commit to that chunk of time. As opposed to an official tournament when the time is specifically planned and you're less likely to get interrupted.
  • People can put up and accept seeks. There's just not the demand, a 45 minute game will just sit there.

I understand some people dont want to play longer games but I dont see why there wouldn't be the option for those who do. I feel like it would get more people playing if they could choose 45 minutes, or whatever.

Yep, this has just happened to me, again. Totally won and my opponent has 22 minutes on the clock...tick...tick...tick...

I think longer games are better organised between people who you know so you can cut out the total morons.
