Game explorer not working for my games

Sort:
Stipe24

I've purchased a membership because I wanted to explore the openings and stats for my games.
However, it's not working for me, it only has 75 of my games, whereas I've played thousands.

I have googled for a solution, no luck. I found a couple of tidbits of info here and there (on the forums), and nothing in the FAQ. I sent a message to bcurtis (who over a year ago posted data would be fixed), as well as a support ticket about it. No responses to either.

Any ideas?
And dooes anyone know whether other sites out there support such a function?

If you look at the Membership chart, opening explorer and game explorer are not offered to Gold members. Therefore, it does seem a little unreasonable for you to complain...

But even if you had a higher level membership, the function that loads live games hasn't worked for at least 3 years:

There are periodic posts from staff in the thread. In particular, post #137 from CEO Erik (made 7 months ago) recognizes the frustration, explains the problem, states that they have made progress in loading correspondence games, apologizes and seems to say that they thought they had a possible solution for live chess games but realized that their existing servers and database structure just can't handle the addition of 1 million new games every day (much less enabling them to catch up on the hundreds of millions of games that were never loaded).

Other sites that do offer this? I have never heard of one. Please let us know if you find one that does. That might force them to fix the problem.

Thanks for the comments!

The Membership chart you link to is off. I am certain that Game explorer is in there with every premium membership, and that access to game explorer is advertised in some places during registration process. To confirm, the explorer itself IS working for me as far as functionality goes - there is no cutoff on move 4-5 like in the free membership - but the problem it has is just that it doesn't include all your games (in fact, it includes only a handful).

The thread as well as the info you posted is very interesting to me. I'm grateful for that.

I wouldn't bother with waiting for them to fix the problem or counting on others to force chess.com to fix it, tbh, I'd just play where I can get that.

Perhaps there's a workaround of some sort.
Downloading all one's games (PGNs), then importing them in some software?

Although, from what I see, you have to download your games in batches, page by page, you cannot seem to get all of them...

I would love to see a more up to date membership benefit chart.

I have to say that somehow my own data got imported and I am finding it quite useful. I am a d4 player and the data shows that the largest number of players go into the Queen's Gambit Accepted. I play a trap line starting with 3 e3. An awful lot of people (118) have tried to hold onto the pawn with 3..b5, which ends up costing them a piece.

I'm actually somewhat chagrined that my win percentage is only 73.7% in that line.

To me, if they could get this working for everybody, it would be one way of differentiating Chess.com. I think it would sell a lot of premium memberships.

This is exactly what I wanted (and still want). I envy you now. :D

If you know of a software that'd do the same thing with my PGN files if I downloaded them all off of a server, I'd just do that.

And also, hopefully they have a better way of downloading ones game archive than picking it up a page by page, 40 by 40 of them.

If you hover over the relevant column on the left of the Membership chart, you will see that Gold members have.." unlimited access to the Master+ Games and their own games, but limited access to other members' games."

Stipe24

I knew I saw that in writing.

And, if only that indeed was so!   :D

I am trying to find a workaround.
The idea now is to download all my games as pgn. But, apparently, I'll need a script for that or else I have to do it page by page (it used to be an option, but isn't anymore!?).
If anyone has it, PM me please.

Then there are sites with opening explorers which support a "PGN database upload". I'll need to somehow get all my games, then somehow merge them into this "pgn database", and then upload that database to the site to finally get something that I'm supposed to get here as is...

Oh, and, chess.com support hasn't replied to my messages/tickets/mails on this. The site boasts replies within 24 hrs as the norm.

Unfortunately customer service here seems non-existant. It's hard to find any recent posts by Staff on any subject and as for Forum moderation...Frown

I have great news - I have found a way. Trying every venue where it made sense, I eventually received one response -

"Probably what you are seeing is that we do not automatically load all of the Live Chess games into explorer for all players. This would be billions of games, and most people do not use this feature extensively. There is a way to get on the list so that your games are available: visit the explorer page in v3. First, click the "Try the new Chess.com" link at the bottom of this page, and then go to "Explorer" under the "Learn" menu. When you do, you won't see your games right away, but they should all be ready within a few minutes and each game that you finish after that should be added within an hour or two of the game finishing."

And I did do that.

And it worked exactly as described!

Wow. That's great!

I am a diamond member and my opening stats do not change despite playing hundreds of games. For example, I recently played a very large number of games as white with the English opening. (1. c4) - yet my openings database stays stuck at 948 games. this sucks. what up?

According to my calculations, you have played about 11,000 games total of all types.

I see 5100 games showing for you as white. That's not very far from half of 11,000.

I don't think you are quite justified in a "this sucks" complaint, since most people haven't been able to access this feature for years.
