Banning a game between 2 people with the same IP should not happen. Me and my friends play chess at lunch on the school pcs all the time, and the school blocks viewing of individual IPs, so the moderators would only see the two wifi network IPs which would be identical.
THE MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS BAN RULE

Hi, everyone. As you all know, it's forbidden to have multiple accounts here on Chess.com.
Unfortunately, having this discussion with Chess.com staff I found out that they can't prove it. I mean, they don't have a system to pick out who is actually enjoying multiple accounts: no emails matching or anything.
What do you think about this?
Is this still a thing? Can they still not detect it?
Staff can detect it and do close multiple accounts when found.

"Staff can detect it and do close multiple accounts when found."
Honest question: how can staff (or anyone) distinguish between two accounts by a single person, and two accounts in the same household? (This is actually relevant to me, as my wife has been (slightly) considering getting an account)

Can you still get banned for it if you don't use it for bad? For example, hypothetically, say someone had two accounts, but didn't do anything bad, I don't understand why that would still be bad.
Yes, it's possible. I don't know how many resources are spent looking for such accounts, so it's very possible that some could fly under the radar, so to speak but there is the risk the accounts could be closed.

Interesting. I would tell you about my wonderful last name, though I wouldn't want to get banned for trolling.

This actually is a second account of mine. I had downloaded the app, logged in using one of the many different options, wanted to comment on something on the forum, had forgotten which option I used, chose the wrong one, didn't notice, was too lazy and already committed to some posts to change it afterwards.
Strictly speaking this account is in violation of the rules, BUT since I only use it to post on the forum in spirit it should not be against the rules. Not a single game has been played, or will ever be played on this account, so there could never be any doubt of cheating by playing myself.
If by confessing to this this account gets banned, so be it. Doesn't really matter.
But on the other hand, don't rated players on here like e.g. Hikaru don't have multiple accounts as well? To actually play? Or are such players above "the law"?

Best to contact support to make them aware, otherwise yes 1 of the accounts can be closed down. https://support.chess.com/article/346-contact-us

but what about people like this dude, https://www.chess.com/member/rums26
who admit they have two accounts

years ago, having multiple accounts was a big issue.
today, not so much, as evidenced by sven admitting he has a second account and stumpy chiming in with "report them".
i know a few people that have multiple accounts. one is a returning cheat. this is how bad cc is on this. they claim to be so good at recognizing these things, but they can't. asking me to report seems to be the way the site has gone-make the members do the work.
while the company line is that multiple accounts and returning cheats are not allowed, there is no real way to discern who has other accounts here.
i also question the cheat detection, because a friend has shown a simple algorithm that the site seems to have overlooked.
on this, my mention of cheating used to result in a topic locked. not anymore. staff only responds to submissions of complaints. they rely on unpaid mods, some that i suspect are teenagers, to determine what is allowed.
fail.
