New Features on Chess.com!!

Submitted by erik on Tue, 07/31/2007 at 2:18pm.

Over the last few months we have had a lot of great feedback from our members on what they would like to see on the site. Thank you! Today we are releasing a  TON of new features for the site. Below is a list and description of the updates:

ONLINE CHESS UPDATES
"Email chess" is no longer called email chess. It is going to become Turn-based chess once LIVE chess is released (in about 3 weeks). We also added:

- an analysis board
- ability to replay through your last moves
- personal NOTES on your game so you can keep your thoughts
- better links on the game page

Later this week we are also adding the option to show coordinates on the board as well as many new chess sets and board colors!

CHESSOPEDIA
We have added a new section called "Chessopedia". It is a repository for factual information on chess - biographies, terminology, rules, openings, events, etc. It acts just like a regular wiki except that it uses a simple text editor instead of wiki language and you can easily embed diagrams/games! Everyone is an editor!

FORUM UPDATES
We have added a bunch of new forum tools including "Quote" feature, new icons for locked, read, sticky, etc, and a new menu to help you find important posts quickly. This should help everyone stay on top of the forums more easily! :)

VIDEO COMMENTS
You can comment on videos!

CHESS.COM MEMBER STORE
Do you love Chess.com? Now you can show your support with cool and funny shirts, hats, mousepads, stickers, etc!

IMPROVED ALERTS
You now have better control over how you get alerts from Chess.com, so that you can choose to have alerts just in your Alert box, or to your email as well.

We know that we don't have 100% of every possible feature of every possible website... yet. But we're working hard to get there and we always welcome your feedback!

Thanks!

Erik, Jay, Piotr, Igor (and now Rodney!)

This site is amazing in every way. It is a model for how versatile an interactive site can be. From a technical standpoint, the site is well organized, making it inviting to participate in discussion, and making it very inviting to play on line.

At first I just played against the computer, somewhat intimidated about playing against actual opponents. Now I am finding games with other participants very satisfying. The conversation box along side the board is a wonderful touch. You can either not use it, use it for brief remarks about the game, and it is always there as a non-demanding, yet readily available channel to get to know one another.

The ambiance of the site is quite friendly. I think Erik's has imbued this site with his personal warmth, always trying to draw people out and encourage them to connect with other people. Even his initial visit when I joined the site gave me the feeling that I was welcome and respected. Our conversation was brief and not sustained, but the fact that Erik had made the effort remained in my mind, helping me to feel more comfortable about getting involved.

Thanks, I am really appreciative. This site gives me an opportunity to do some very worthwhile procrastination!

Fantastic new stuff, especially to the "Online Chess". The analysis board and notes section make it a lot easier to really see what's going on. Thanks!

Wow! Cool stuff. I like the Email Chess stuff; I have already started using them - making notes and replaying games. Awesome!

I checked out the store... I will get back to it. I guess I will have to find a way to ask if I can get a mock-turtleneck chess.com t-shirt. The Tiger Woods ones. (Sorry, I just asked for it!)

I will check the rest after I post this!

Keep up the good work!
