A New Citizen's Guide to New Athens

New Athens is a chess.com group inspired by ideas from historical Athens.

We are divided into ten tribes whose officials each take turns to govern New Athens for one tenth of the year. You can find out who is in which tribe in this Google Doc. The document also identifies the Generals and Phylarchs of each tribe.

Generals plan out battles (matches) at the Military Magistrates' Court where all citizens are free to observe and occasionally comment. The Phylarchs arrange training excerises (vote chess) run from each of the ten tribal groups hyperlinked in the first post at this court. Foreign military leaders also occasionally visit here.

Most citizens fight as Hoplites but the more skilled Citizens of New Athens (>1600), who are also available to be called into battle at short notice, are the Hipparchs (Cavalry Officers). They can be found at The Stables.

New Athens is currently run from the Civil Magistrates' Court by an Archon. This is where you would go to inquire about detailed matters relating to the future plans for New Athens as New Athens is growing, and growing fast. We are currently entertaining two foreign dignitaries: one from The 13th Legion of Rome and one from the Forces of Nature.

Due to a problem with excessive commotion at the City Gates (the notes section), which has deterred visitors to New Athens from entering or staying long, The Agora has recently been made available for the gossip of the day. It is governed by a Superintendent who will ensure that there is no trouble there. The City Gates themselves are strictly reserved for welcoming visitors and only brief conversation. The leading post of The Agora forum also links to The Agora group where the notes page is open to high-frequency off-topic chatter.

You will become accustomed to other details of New Athens over time.
