The Blogger Awards: December 2025 Winners
Hello everyone! Welcome to the latest installment of The Blogger Awards v2.0, covering entries in December 2025! This continues a blogging community tradition that recognizes the best blogs of the month in different categories.
It's time to announce the results. All those who reach the podium can expect to see the results reflected in The Blogger Awards v2.0 Medal Table in short order.
Judges: @VOB96, @nova-stone, @KevinChessSmith
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: @WinT0L0ss for Game Set Mate
Silver: @theeldest1 for I beat the New Zealand Chess Champion!
Bronze: @fischersh2pawn for The Dark Side of Streaming and @HornetCruise for The Top 5 Most Jaw-Dropping Chess Moments of 2025
Received votes: @JugadaBrillante
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some comments from the judges:
VOB96:
Among many very good candidates, I decided that my favorite one was @WinT0L0ss with a simple and effective word play. @HornetCruise earned my second place for a title that really caught my attention. My 3rd goes to @JugadaBrillante for a similar reason and for having used the famous Oscars line. Some honorable mentions to @theeldest1 and @fischersh2pawn.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
For being concise, witty, and still introduce the topic, my vote for gold goes to @WinT0L0ss. Silver and bronze were a close call because both had me want to click on it right away. I let the order depend on how well they introduced and fitted with the topic and placed @theeldest1 second and @fischersh2pawn third.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
I placed @theeldest1 on top of this category because beating a national champion is something all of us want to do... in any sport! Then @WinT0L0ss merits silver after spinning another gem of a title this month, leading into a great topic about tennis and chess, both of which I suck at according to the top players! @fischersh2pawn evoked a dark element with their title that should have drawn in many an unwary a reader (who would have been delighted by what followed, imo). Given my pfp, I clearly have a fondness for a certain dark humor, so they earned my bronze nomination. @HornetCruise just missed out on a bronze-medal nomination from me, but I loved that their title was jaw-dropping!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: @theeldest1 for I beat the New Zealand Chess Champion!
Silver: @fischersh2pawn for The Dark Side of Streaming
Bronze: @PokeGirl93 for My Chess Goals for 2026!
Received votes: @Jehtt
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some comments from the judges:
VOB96:
@theeldest1 and his recap of the tournaments in Middle-Earth were very nice and deserve to earn gold for this category. @fischersh2pawn also chose something interesting to talk about and with a different but honest perspective. I agree with the two other judges that @PokeGirl93 is a worthy bronze medalist, but I casted my vote for @Jehtt because that was something new and amazing for me to discover.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
Since this was an end-of-year competition and many people take a moment to contemplate the past and upcoming year, I decided to go for topics that I felt would inspire the readers to action in 2026. In this, I felt that the personal triumph blog by @theeldest1 hit several targets at once: travelling, pursuing your goals, and taking down a local titan in the process. I also loved seeing the feud with Dina Belenkaya come to its rightful cconclusion and think that @fischersh2pawn deserves silver. Bronze would go to @PokeGirl93 for mixing a set of solid real-life goals with a set of hilariously absurd ones.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
@fischersh2pawn had a far different take than usual on streamers and followed it up well, so I gave them a plug for gold. @theeldest1's topic was a great chess travelogue, super enjoyable and positive, so I placed them second. @PokeGirl93 did something all too rarely seen--laying out goals! Hilarious goals that full of spirit, but balanced against the achievable. Plus, how can anyone resist a plan that starts a contest between babies! @Chesser1492 nearly earned a bronze point from in this this category--great topic!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: @MaybeEvery for dec 2025 bot review: holiday special
Silver: @PokeGirl93 for My Chess Goals for 2026!
Bronze: @Lightning_McQueen_14 for PROXIMUS
Received votes: @fischersh2pawn
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some comments from the judges:
VOB96:
Another brilliant piece of humour by @MaybeEvery, who earns my gold. My other two nominess were @Lightning_McQueen_14 and @PokeGirl93. Although some jokes are not appropriate for all ages, I had fun reading it especially for the fact that many of the people we know are "involved", and Leticia's blog is obviously hilarious for its absurdity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
My gold here went to @PokeGirl93, because I had to pause reading as soon as I read the Chapter 1 header. I'd have a silver for @MaybeEvery for a genuinely fun endeavour, and bronze for @Lightning_McQueen_14 for going ballistic in making me look like an unhinged banshee.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
@MaybeEvery did a great bot-job! Ring that golden bell, imo. @fischersh2pawn rang up another medal nomination from me, placing second on my podium with a topic that was designed for humor, and they handled that very well indeed. @PokeGirl93 earned bronze because the concepts were so off-the-wall, capped by babies competing for the GM fast enough for all of us to witness it! @theeldest1 will have to be satisfied with the medal points I granted them in other categories. You came close here as well with some great touches.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: @emateu26 for ESNA 2025 - Andorra plays in Cyprus before it becomes mainstream
Silver: @fischersh2pawn for The Dark Side of Streaming and @theeldest1 for I beat the New Zealand Chess Champion!
Bronze: N/A due to tie for silver
Received votes: @JDChess121
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some comments from the judges:
VOB96:
@emateu26 is our first unanimous decision, so there is very few I should comment on it. Well deserved. My second place went to @theeldest1 for the interesting insights about his games. Third place was between @fischersh2pawn and @JDChess121, but I opted for the latter for a very tiny margin.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
To begin with, I must say that it's heart-warming to see that many people are willing to adopt the English and the Caro-Kann into their repertoires! For that reason alone @emateu26 deserves gold. It's just a bonus that the analyses of his real-time games are also very good. At silver and bronze I have @fischersh2pawn and @theeldest1. An honourable mention for @jolie92 who makes a very important analytical point, and I feel that her post would've made the podium for me if there had been a full example to demonstrate the points in action.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
Analysis needs to be honed patiently. In some sense, it's not a natural act to question what you did "sort of right (but you may have been helped by your opponent missing chances)", and who wants to revisit what you did wrong? But there's a point to analyzing games well. Once you can explain to yourself why something worked or didn't work, then you can apply that knowledge in the future. That translates to more points. Personally, I thought @emateu26 did a great job demonstrating the necessary analytic skills. G = great = gold! @fischersh2pawn stayed on the pantheon for me, missing out on gold, but snagging silver. I placed @theeldest1 third. Seeing a lot of very good analysis these days. Some of the other folks would have medaled not that many months ago. Keep it up, everyone!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: @PokeGirl93 for My Chess Goals for 2026!
Silver: @theeldest1 for I beat the New Zealand Chess Champion!
Bronze: @emateu26 for ESNA 2025 - Andorra plays in Cyprus before it becomes mainstream
Received votes: @HornetCruise; @JugadaBrillante; @MrRiskau99
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some comments from the judges:
VOB96:
Because the end of the year is coming, the blogs that I was more engaged into the reading were the ones that were somehow related to this. The users who kept me always curious to read the next chapter and find out what was coming were @PokeGirl93, @JugadaBrillante, and @HornetCruise, although in this category I could list many honorable mentions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
It's not just the fact that this month saw the astounding amount of 34 blogs that makes it hard to determine this one. It's also the fact that there were so many engaging posts that made it difficult to determine any order at all. I had at least 9 entries on the list, but only three posts that I can award points to. From gold to bronze: @theeldest1, @PokeGirl93, @emateu26.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
@emateu26 provided the blog that most captivated me: OTB team tournament, an intriguing small nations lineup, riveting games, great pictures and side events, capped by an endless seeming march of games playing as White! Sterling silver for @theeldest1 with a storyline that twisted and turned its way to intriguing places and unexpected enounters. The one I'll go back to is my bronze candidate, @MrRiskau99 with a very different take on what a blog can be, a take I quite enjoyed as a breath of fresh air. @WinT0L0ss just missed out on my personal podium list, and any number of others were clamoring in the back of my head for a vote.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: @alphaous for Putting Every World Chess Championship Into A Tier List
Silver: @read-23 for Comfort at Your Opponent's Expense
Bronze: @WinT0L0ss for Game Set Mate
Received votes: @HornetCruise
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some comments from the judges:
VOB96:
Very very hard to decide because we had many entries with some excellent writing this month. To be fair, judging in TBA during BC Qualifiers is a challenge because of how much the level goes up. But I had to choose only 3, so I opted for @read-23, @alphaous, and @WinT0L0ss. Honorable mentions to @theeldest1 and @emateu26.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
Another category that my desk doesn't approve of because of all the forehead-smashing that it causes to the judges. Might be just me. And thank you for my headache, because you did a great job, all! My podium consists of @alphaous, @read-23, and @WinT0L0ss, but many others could've qualified here.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
The podium cannot fit eight people onto it, so I'm only listing my top three finishers. @alphaous for gold, @HornetCruise for silver, and @WinT0L0ss for bronze.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: @Charlie_Harold for Over-The-Board Tournament Rules You MUST Know!
Silver: @DocSimooo for The 2025 Ultimate Guide to Chess.com Clubs
Bronze: @PokeGirl93 for My Chess Goals for 2026!
Received votes: N/A
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some comments from the judges:
VOB96:
This category is always a huge challenge to judge because we must look into very small ridiculous details to decide. However, the three that outstood just a bit more than the rest were, for me, @Charlie_Harold, @DocSimooo, and @PokeGirl93. I must mention that @HornetCruise, @PierreLuc, and @Flottant-N were very close too.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
In terms of editing, many of your posts would outshine the average TB. Personally I think that @Charlie_Harold did an astounding job alternating text and image in a way that makes it come across as very non-mechanical while still being overall easy for the eye. In the same vein, @PokeGirl93 did an amazing job on the lay-out. And while I'm not a fan of yellow text because of the fact that I have xanthophobia text and elements in yellow and pattens blue don't work well against a white background in light UI, I'd have @DocSimooo in third place thanks to an otherwise virtually impeccable job.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
See the comment from best writing about the discouraging truth that I cannot award points for more than three medals. 😢 @DocSimooo for gold, @Charlie_Harold for silver, and @PokeGirl93for bronze.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: @fischersh2pawn
Silver: @PolishDavidd
Bronze: @Jehtt
Received votes: @GM-Dimitrios-M
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
VOB96:
The first place was almost an obvious choice for @fischersh2pawn. In second, I placed @Jehtt for finally linking a post with chess, what an improvement. My third was hard to decide because we had either consolidated good bloggers or novices who hadn't had the time to demonstrate too much improvement yet. But in the end, I chose @PolishDavidd.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
The very first name that came up for this category was @fischersh2pawn, but next to this the progress between the first and the second post that @PolishDavidd wrote is just remarkable. Likewise, I was pleasantly surprised to see @GM-Dimitrios-M put together a comprehensive and all-round solid end-of-year post.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
@fischersh2pawn earned my spot in the golden spotlight because he suddenly hit all the right notes for me in multiple categories.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: @WinT0L0ss for Game Set Mate
Silver: @DocSimooo for The 2025 Ultimate Guide to Chess.com Clubs
Bronze: @HornetCruise for The Top 5 Most Jaw-Dropping Chess Moments of 2025 and @WillowCat423 for No Blunders Allowed: Capablanca’s Story
Received votes: @Blueberry-cat; @Charlie_Harold
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some comments from the judges:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
VOB96:
@WinT0L0ss' was funny and nice, giving the exact atmosphere of the blog. I also really appreciated the efforts of @WillowCat423 and @Blueberry-cat, who earned my silver and bronze respectively. But no, changing your username to something related to Cat will not increase your chances with me. I prefer to believe it was a coincidence.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
What makes me want to click? Niemann on a tennis ball hit by Carlsen, of course! So @WinT0L0ss wins my gold here. I'll have @DocSimooo for silver, because of the fact that while it's full of elements, it doesn't in any way feel crammed or overkill. And despite having the blog title in the thumbnail, I found the execution of the thumbnail by @Charlie_Harold to be a very inviting one that wins my bronze.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
I couldn't help but applaud @WinT0L0ss's thumb, an image of Magnus taking a shot at Hans! @HornetCruise had the most beautiful B&W montage I've seen in some time. Sorry, I slotted you for silver; even though this was clearly a golden entry, I was a sucker for the racquet hitting the tennis ball. @DocSimooo provided a super-blog this month, and I couldn't resist responding with a bronze nomination for a thumbnail that was all about improving! @Anna_chess11 is the unlucky 4th in this category for me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: @alphaous for Putting Every World Chess Championship Into A Tier List
Silver: @DocSimooo for The 2025 Ultimate Guide to Chess.com Clubs
Bronze: @Charlie_Harold for Over-The-Board Tournament Rules You MUST Know!
Received votes: @JETINATE
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some comments from the judges:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
VOB96:
@alphaous wins by a mile, followed by @DocSimooo by another mile. The third place was a challenge, but in the end, I opted for @JETINATE just a little before @Charlie_Harold. Creating this category was a nice idea by the way, and although this can be confirmation bias, I do feel like the overall research effort is becoming better lately.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
While commonly mistaken as something that you do with only one specific purpose in mind, it also involves the aeons of time that you spend immersing yourself in the subject well before you even thought to turn it into a blog. For me, @alphaous takes the gold here because of the enormous amount of work that had to be performed before putting pen to paper for a blog like this one. @DocSimooo also had a deep immersion with the subject of Chess.com groups in order to put every little aspect of this vital community feature to words. Third, while there are some minor elements of OTB rules that aren't completely accurate in my view, @Charlie_Harold did a very good job amassing and elucidating so many different elements of OTB.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
@alphaous easily grabbed a gold nomination from me because I've spent a lot of time looking at all the world CC matches and know just how much work it requires to establish a framework for grading them and then grinding through the games to separate actual gold nuggets from iron pyrite. My hat is off to you! @DocSimooo perched on my personal podium again, this time at silver, for compiling presenting all that great research and data about clubs. Trailing in third was @Charlie_Harold who delved into all the tournament rules you need to know to keep you out of trouble. My own introduction to arcane rules came in golf on the second hole I ever played. I "grounded" my club in a sand trap while considering how to hit the ball. I stayed away from golf for decades after that. Too expensive, and chess rules make more sense. Finally... sorry, @Anna_chess11, for a second straight category I placed you 4th.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Gold: Capturing the ultimate recognition was @theeldest1 for I beat the New Zealand Chess Champion!
Silver: @emateu26 for ESNA 2025 - Andorra plays in Cyprus before it becomes mainstream
Bronze: @DocSimooo for The 2025 Ultimate Guide to Chess.com Clubs
Received votes: @alphaous
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some comments from the judges:
VOB96:
In a month with 34 entries, it is obviously very hard to decide. Nevertheless, I believe the top 3 is in good hand with @theeldest1, @DocSimooo, and @emateu26. Congratulations to everyone for one of the best months in the history of this club!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
nova-stone:
There were many great blogs this month, and the monster that is my insomnia was very happy to use the diet of all of your blogs as fuel to keep me awake during more nights than I wanted. Thank you! The blogs by @theeldest1 and @emateu26 really made me feel like I was actually a fly on the wall in their endeavours. @DocSimooo completes the podium for me for an overall outstanding post with the potential for enduring relevance.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
KevinChessSmith:
The great news: The quantity and quality of the competitors' inputs continue to evolve and grow! The bad news: As mentioned before, I can only submit three names for medals. In this month I hewed close to a comforting metric: high-quality, easily understandable writing that is edited well, images that support the narrative, the topic directly touches on chess, and the blog includes personal touches. Heck, you say, "That's me." Yes, it was for many of you. But I whittled my list down to ten, then seven, and then three. Gold: @theeldest1 Silver: @emateu26 Bronze: @alphaous

A SPECIAL APPENDIX
(one that isn't a random, internal human organ with no apparent use)
Because it's the end of the year, we thought we'd add section where Kevin/the judges picked some of the Best Blogs of the year that particularly stood out for them.
@KevinChessSmith's mutterings, thoughts, and nattering. I reviewed every blog that earned a medal during the year, not just golds, but silvers and bronzes. After forty of those I started to wonder how anyone could bear to be in the desert that long, or stranded in a large, waterborne craft with a multitude of animals who are going to do what comes naturally... assuming they ate, but let's ignore both the logistical issue and the matter of hunters and prey confined in a small space.
Besides, by number forty I had bigger issues crowding my skull than how to fit six elephants into a Volkswagen (you either know, or you don't). The big question being, how do I decide?
My kids are gamers. I took their approach when faced with an insoluble problem. Find a cheat. You'll find my solution below, with no explanation of why I took this path. In alphabetical order by category, please welcome the winners:

Choose Your Own Adventure (CHYOA)
The Lord Of The Pawns by @VOB96

Reimagining J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings as a chess adventure was a great idea, but the writing betokened a great investment in melding the two worlds into one. That's what elevated this CHYOA above some other truly great efforts this year by our two masters of the medium. Who's the other? Well, @JugadaBrillante of course! Another great maestro of CHYOA blog a-MAZE-ment!🏅

Coaching Chess Kids
Judo Talent vs. Chess Talent. A Case Study With Children by @PokeGirl93

I'm going all the way back to @PokeGirl93's very first blog (yes, her first). It took silver in January 2025, meaning she could never win Most Improved as going from silver to gold at that point was clearly just a matter of time and continued posting.
Why is this blog so important, imo? Is it because she took silver the first time that she stepped in the bloggers ring? Nope. Quite simply, some people (otherwise known as the anonymous "they") insist that chess can be an inspiration and guiding influence for kids, and then present findings that remind me of the chess.com bot's analysis of a game. Leticia spelled it all out in a way I could understand and did so with passion, very personal touches, and great humor...plus charts! (Those are some of her blogging superpowers, btw.)
Comparison & Metaphor
The mathematical and musical harmony of chess by @DocSimooo

Bobby Fischer already said it: chess is life. For as long as chess has existed, it's served as a metaphor for everything else in life: love, war, politics, intrigue, competition, art, science, and what-not. The only metaphor for chess itself, however, is chess itself. This world on 64 squares has its own cosmic internal logic from the base axis to infinity, from the opening notes to the closing cadenza or Trugschluß, from the starting position to the checkmate. It means something different to each, and you can make it as long and complex as you want.
So, behold the Gödel, Escher, Bach of chess blogging.

Historical Visit Into the Little Known
Two Masters, Two Grim Fates by @AstroTheoretical_Physics

Bringing stories of once famous but now often forgotten players is tackled by many. Astro takes it to a whole new level, introducing us to the lives and fates of players who weren't world-beaters and perhaps not even national champions, but were still extremely strong players in their own right. Then dives into their historical background to bring them to life through their games and personal histories. It's work like this that leaves easily sourced writings about Alekhine or Botvinnik in the dust.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Learnin'
(it's like the reading, writing, and arithmetic phase of chess)
Moving Beyond: Meta-Analysis by @nova-stone

First you learn the moves. Then everyone gets excited about the Fools' Mate, just before they discover there are better openings. Somewhere along the way somebody mentions they should learn endings...oh, and study their games. But THEN, they discover a world of streamers and bloggers who offer their FM/IM/untitled player of your choice insights into how you can beat someone in ten moves or less. At least the titled players might remind you to study your games. But nobody tells you what they mean about analysis. Besides, it's easy to step up and drink deep from the trough of the silicon gods who offer accuracy in the tenths of digits, and anything that has decimal points must be important!
Okay, step back pilgrim. Take a deep breath and learn from someone who's willing to set you on firmament that won't crumble at the merest sight of a threat. Being a fan of analysis myself, both in my professional career and as a chess player/author, I think you can learn a lot from nova's work. Plus, it's available on a daily basis! (barring unusual circumstances.)

Personal Chess Life Stories
My Chess World: Behind And Beyond The Board by @Alina_Bakhtina_24

The blogger's personal connection with the topic of their blog is what sets it apart. It's why even experts and above can enjoy the growth stories of people trying to progress to 1000/1500/2000/2200/2500 over the board (and sometimes even online). Alina has taken it to another dimension in this blog, sharing her experiences from her introduction to the game, to joining a club, playing as part of a team, and jumping into individual competitions.
Plus, sharing wonderful photos. Then she closes her wonderful post by thanking bloggers who inspired her, @ChocoCaramelPawn who helped her with a technical problem with the music, and her readers.
Yeah, you're winning in all the right ways.

Research - The Quest for Knowledge
Chess of the Wind: The Lost Chess Film by @JustGettingThisOffMyChess

Do you enjoy quests? Did you read the DaVinci Code? Watch Nicolas Cage in one of his National Treasure Movies? Enjoy the Indiana Jones films? Play Lara Croft in Tomb Raider? Get a few laughs out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Can easily binge on putting together 1,000-piece table puzzles?
Hey, that's research! Imho, JGTOMC nailed all those aspects in his search to track down the origins of this film. There were roadblocks, setbacks, unexpected surprises, the enlistment of outside help, and sheer coincidences that defied all expectations, like a deus ex machina taken to absurd lengths. Best of all, his first steps along this quest started when he was only eight years old, unbeknownst to him or anyone else in the world. What's that saying about a butterfly flapping its wings in China? Oh, that's right, I remember that one. Feel free to look it up. 😉
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is it! Congratulations to all the award winners, all the podium finishers, and everyone who took part! Remember: the competition for December has already opened and we welcome your best blog as you try again to claim a spot on one or more podiums!
We'll see you soon with the January 2026 winners!
