The French Defense and Why to NOT Play It!

One of the most popular opening choices for black is the French Defense. But the problem is that it is not a good one. It is an opening for black but it lowers black's chances of winning the game.

The French Defense locks in black's light- squared bishop and slows down development. The French Defense can morph into the French Defense: Advance Variation in which white deprives black of space and white develops quickly.

Advancing the pawn to e5 can be a great thing when you catch your opponent playing the French Defense. The 'Advance Variation" also gives white a lot of attacking chances.
