I recently hit 1800 rating on Chess.com! 🏆

It’s been a journey full of wins, losses, and learning. Whether you're just starting out or stuck in a rating plateau, I thought I’d share the steps I took to get here. Hopefully, it helps you too!

🧩 Step 1: I Focused on Tactics

I started solving tactics puzzles almost every day. I didn’t worry too much about being fast—I just tried to understand each position. Chess.com’s puzzle trainer helped a lot. I noticed that after a few weeks, I was spotting forks, pins, and mates way faster in real games.

♟️ Step 2: I Played Longer Time Controls

I switched from bullet and blitz to rapid games (10|0 or 15|10). It gave me more time to think, avoid silly mistakes, and actually apply the things I was learning. It slowed me down in a good way.

📚 Step 3: I Studied My Openings – The Italian Game

I kept it simple and solid. As White, I mostly played the Italian Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4). It helped me get quick development, safe castling, and chances to attack the king early. I didn’t memorize tons of lines—I just learned the main ideas: control the center, develop quickly, and don’t rush into crazy attacks.

🔍 Step 4: I Analyzed My Games

After each game, especially the ones I lost, I clicked on the “Analyze” button and looked at my mistakes. I asked myself:

  • Why did I lose that piece?

  • What better move could I have played?
This helped me stop repeating the same mistakes.

🧠 Step 5: I Watched Chess Content

Sometimes I just watched chess YouTubers or streamers. My favorites were players who explained their thought process while playing. It made me think more clearly during my own games.

🏁 Final Thoughts

I didn’t get to 1800 overnight. There were ups and downs, but I kept going. The biggest thing I learned? Improving at chess is more about consistency than talent. If you enjoy the game and put in a little time each day, you will get better.

If you're trying to reach 1800 or any other goal—good luck! You got this. 💪♟️
