Double rook endgame against Gleb Dudin

Double rook endgame against Gleb Dudin

In the final 9th round of the Vezerkepzo 2022 May GM tourney I played with Gleb Dudin, the Winner of the tourney, a young russian talent who made half point more than the Grandmaster norm and made 1 point more then the 2nd player.

He surprised me with 3.Bg5 in the exchange Slav. After spending around 20 minutes I found the best way to deal with it Nc6, f6-e5 to attack the center. I allowed him to create me an isolated pawn on e5 and the game was around that pawn. He put on pressure and with accurate play I kept the balance long, but when time was short I made mistakes in the endgame. The most important takeaway from the game: Always look for activity! Also look for ways to sacrifice the weak pawn for counterplay. The game was similar like my game against Grandmaster Aveskulov, where I had also a passed pawn and lost the pawn in a rook endgame and then lost the game.

I need to improve my calculation speed, so in time trouble I can find at least as good moves as my opponents. I need to improve my endgame defensive skills to be able to hold defendable positions.

In the next weeks I plan to focus on calculation training. I plan to play around 20 blitz games a week and briefly review them to improve my openings and learn from my mistakes.
