Road to the Grandmaster title - March GM round 4 - Richter-Rauzer attack

In the 4th round of the First Saturday Grandmaster Tournament I played against the young German International Master Max Hess. He got the 3rd place in the 2020 German Championship. He is one of the best German talents.  He is the 2nd highest rated player in the tourney with a rating of 2441.

I played the classical sicilian. He replied with the aggressive Bb5 line of the Richter-Rauzer attack. It was a good surprise, because I played it only a few times in my life. I used a lot of time and that lead to the time trouble later which prevented me to win the better position. So I will study this line to be able to play quicker next time.

He built up a big pressure and I did not lost any material, but the isolated c-pawn and weak c5 square gave him a big advantage.

At the end of the opening phase he allowed me to destroy his pawn structure and get a big advantage. I had several chances to go to a winning endgame, but under the time pressure I followed a bad plan and gave up one of my passed pawn which allowed him to safe the game:
