Road to the Grandmaster title |Reassess your chess with IM Attila Turzo | The Imbalances | part 1.
Today I decided to reread and study the wonderful book: How to reassess your chess by Jeremy Silman.
The knowledge of this book helps to build up a good foundation for positional chess.
In the first chapter it show an overview of the topics of the book.
1. Superior Minor Piece
An example when the bishop is superior:
White plays Bc3 with Qd4 idea and the power of the bishop supported by the queen wins the game against the weak black king.
The black knight has no active role and future.
Bishops are strong in open positions, when their diagonals are not blocked by pawns.
Bishops are good in the endgame, specially when pawns are on both sides, so they can support their own pawns on one side and stop the opponent's passed pawn on the other side.
When the knight is superior:
Knight are strongest in closed positions with many pawns on the board, because they can jump around the pawns, when bishops are blocked.
Knights are best placed on outposts where the opponent can not attack it with a pawn anymore
The e6 knight can not be exchanged anymore and it attacks the weak pawn on c7 and the g7 square to attack the king.
The black bishop is blocked by its own pawns.
The rook can go to b1 and then to b7 to attack the c7 together with the string knight.
In this session these other topics were discussed:
- Pawn structure
- Space advantage
- Material advantage
- Open files
