It may seem like a boring thing to do. Imagine, reading a Dictionary...!

But of course, one can learn a lot by reading a repository of definitions, learning about words and their meanings--especially chess words! Who would not want to increase their knowledge about 'the building blocks' of chess? What we understand about the game, how we express it, and what enables us to maximize our enjoyment of the game--these are all things with which a Chess Dictionary can help!

On October 7, 2021, I posted a Blog: 'A Romp Through the Chess Dictionary.'[A Romp Through the Chess Dictionary]. The Crossword in this blog was based on Byrne J. Horton's, Dictionary of Modern Chess (New York: Philosophical Library, 1959). Horton was assisted in this labor by James B. Horton and Dorothy Bawden Horton.

Now, here's a follow-up. My hope is that working through this Crossword will open some new dimensions of knowledge and provide some new and wider perspectives on the game we love. The history of chess, as a Dictionary witnesses, is broader and deeper than we can recognize 'on our own.' Dipping into the terms associated with chess--in a wide way--can strengthen our appreciations for this wonderful game. As Horton said: 'This Dictionary of Modern Chess is offered primarily to all those who are seeking information which will help them to obtain a greater enjoyment and satisfaction in understanding and appreciating the language of chessplayers.' He continued: 'If perchance, this dictionary should be of some use to advanced chessplayers and experts in the field of chess, that will, of course, be very gratifying to the authors' (ix). We are grateful to the Horton's for this work!

May this Crossword open avenues of new exploration!
