Free Piece... or is it?

Free Piece... or is it?

Hanging a piece can happen to almost everyone, even the top players. But sometimes a piece seems free, but actually comes with consequences. Here is an example from a game played by two kids just starting their chess journey. White thinks Black's knight is free, but you probably know that it's not.

This is most probably a mistake you wouldn't make. Here is an example that is a bit harder. Can you find what to do after Bxh7? (Hint: do Bxh7)

Highlight this with your mouse to see the answer: Bxh7 Kxh7 Ng5+

Here is one which is a bit harder that I actually played in one of my games. I sacrifice my bishop and win a rook. Can you see what I played?

Highlight this with your mouse to see the answer: Bxg3! hxg3 Rh1+ Kf2 Rxa1

Here is the most hardest one of them all, played by Samuel Boden, the master of bishops.

Highlight this with your mouse to see the answer: Qxc3+ bxc3 Ba3#

Here are three games with hanging knights. Which knight is okay to take?

A.

B.

C.

Highlight this with your mouse to see the answer: A. If you take the knight in B, your queen gets pinned with Bg4. If you take the knight in C, your king and rook get forked with Bg4.
