How to Bring Up Your Rating

Most people on Chess.com are working to improve their rating. Sometimes they are successful, but sometimes they fail and their rating ends up going down instead of up. So today, I'll be giving you some tips to bring up your rating. This will be focused around blitz and rapid.

1. Study Chess, Don't just Play

Sometimes, people are unsuccessful at bringing up their rating because they make the same mistakes over and over again. If you're having a hard time increasing your rating, try to do something that will help you play better. This includes analyzing your games, studying openings, etc.

2. Sharpen your Mind Before Playing

If you are about to play with the intention of bringing up your rating, I suggest sharpening your mind before playing. The best way to do this is to do some chess puzzles. Doing this can help you spot tactics in your games. Speaking of puzzles, try to find the move that the world champion played in this position.

3. Only Rematch when Necessary

Let's say you lost a game and after the game, your opponent requests a rematch. You may want to get your revenge, but you should resist the temptation and play a different opponent. If you rematch, you may lose again, and accept another rematch, and the cycle repeats over and over again, and you lose many points while your opponent gains a lot of points. Feel free to rematch if you were the one who won. wink.png

4. Take a Break

One of the main causes of tilting is not taking breaks. If you are losing game after game, take a break for minimum 30 minutes, though it may be tempting to play again to get back your rating. Continual losses can cause you not to play as well as usual. My friend was losing lots of games, and this caused him to miss the important tactic below.

5. Feel Free to Play Unrated

You don't always have to play rated matches. If you are tired or sleepy or not having a good time, play unrated, so that if you lose you won't lose rating points. Don't play rated or you may regret it.
