Mastering the Extra Pawn

Mastering the Extra Pawn

Most games of chess come down to the endgame. In these games, it is common that one player acquires an extra pawn. This pawn is the deciding factor of the game. But sometimes, promoting that extra pawn can be difficult. Let's start with the basics.

In this position, the white king has a pawn and the black king doesn't. To promote the pawn, white must make sure to keep an odd number of squares between the two kings when it is his opponent's turn.

There is also a crucial position to know.

But sometimes, there is more than one pawn on the board. Take the position below for an example.

Assume it's white's turn. If it was black's turn, then black would easily be pushed aside. This is where triangulation comes into play. By moving the white king in a triangle, we can get to the same position, but with black to play.

But sometimes, not all the pawns will make it. In endgames that folow Bahr's Rule, you have to sacrifice a pawn, and to distract their king, while you capture the other pawn. Try the below position. Make sure to push a5 first.

So remember these three ways to promote your pawn:

1. Opposition

2. Triangulation

3. Bahr's Rule

And that ends the blog! With good execution, extra pawns can usually lead to a win. Also, king and pawn endgames are my favorite types of endgames, what are yours?
