Top 10 Ways to Get Better at Chess
The one thing we all want to do - get better at chess. There are many ways to do this, but sometimes people just want to improve but don't know how to. So here, I am going to be listing the Top 10 Ways to Get Better at Chess. This list will be based on how much it improves your skill and how hard it is to do.
10. Chess Terms
There are many strategies in chess. The chess terms page is perfect to learn dozens of strategies. And also, each term has puzzles at the end to test your skills. Click here to go to Chess Terms.
9. Streamers
One of the best ways to be the best is to learn from the best. And while studying master games is good, when you watch streamers, (depending on which ones) they say what they are thinking, so you can learn to think like them. Also, watching streamers is much more fun than studying games. I recommend @Hikaru and @GothamChess since they usually show their thought process.
8. Openings
The first moves in chess impact the whole game. So that is why many study openings! Click here to learn openings. The thing is, you can't only study openings...
7. Blogs
Some blogs give you very in-depth explanations of strategies in chess. The only reason why this is so low on the list is because most blogs do not teach you. If you want to read instructional blogs, here are some people who make instructional blogs: @DonRajesh, (totally not biased) @ThePawnSlayer, and @EnergeticHay.
6. Study Grandmaster Games
One of the best ways to become the best is to learn from the best. Chess.com has a collection of games of famous chess players, from Bobby Fischer to Garry Kasparov. Click here to be sent to the master games collection.
5. YouTube Lessons
There are not that many videos on chess tactics in youtube, but the videos that are there are really good. Above is a video by the one and only Magnus Carlsen (and unfortunately this is his one and only instructional video) but there are plenty other videos.
4. Chess.com Lessons
Chess.com has tons of lessons to help you improve your chess in any aspect. There's a huge variety in lessons to choose from, so I strongly recommend you check them out.
3. Puzzles
Chess.com has many puzzles to help you get better at chess, from checkmates to sacrifices to endgames. They also make them really fun with modes like Puzzle Rush and Puzzle Battle. If you have money to spend, you should definitely by The Woodpecker Method. It's famous for how well it teaches you tactics.
2. Analyze your Games
Analyzing your own games is very important so you don't make the same mistakes over and over again. Even grandmasters do this, and it is very important to do to make your chess career a success. If you want to know how to analyze your games, click here to watch a video made by IM @DanielRensch on how to do this.
1. Play Games
From what I've seen, playing games is the best way to improve. As they say, "Practice makes perfect, " and chess is not an exception for this. When you play, you learn more and become greater at chess. No matter what, even if you read all the chess books, learn all the lessons, do all the puzzles, study so many master games, you will never get good without playing. However, do take breaks after consecutive losses. Playing again won't help.
Hope you all enjoyed! These are most of the ways to improve that I know, so let me know if there's anything else I missed. Thanks for reading!
