Bishop vs Knight Comparison!
Hello all,
I was studying some chess today when I ran into the following question: Which minor piece is better? The bishop or the knight?
Well... let's see what each piece has to offer first!
Bishop:
- Long range
- 1 color complex
- Worth 3 points in material system
- Works great with another bishop of opposite color
Knight:
- Short Range
- 2 color complexes
- Also worth 3 points in material system
- Can hop over its own pieces
- Loves outposts
- Does not work well when 2 knights are fighting for the same squares.
Here are some conclusions we can draw from that information...
General Conclusions:
1. Knight is better in closed positions, bishop is better in open positions
2. Knights are better when pawns are on the same side of the board in endgames
3. Bishops can dominate knights on the side of the board
4. The bishop pair is usually better than a pair of knights
5. Bishops love long diagonals, knights love outposts.
Here are some examples of those 5 general conclusions!
1. Knight is better in closed positions, bishop is better in open positions
3. Bishops can dominate knights on the side of the board
5. Bishops love long diagonals, knights love outposts.
