Master Chess at Any Age, Within 5 Years

As Chess University's most comprehensive and ambitious course, the Prodigy Program is designed to create chess prodigies out of youth players and take them, or any chess player at any age, to master-level within 5 years. By offering the highest quality of live lessons, study guides, homework, personalized game analysis, and unlimited guidance from our world-class team of coaches, we provide dedicated chess players a clear path to improvement and mastery. Important Information:

  • The August 2016 month of the Prodigy Program is taught by Kairav Joshi, FM Dalton Perrine, FM Arne Jochens, FM Elliott Liu, IM Nazi Paikidze, GM Alex Yermolinsky, and GM Alexei Shirov.
  • This month's program offers  12 hours of live lessons (that get recorded so students can review), three detailed study guides, class homework, simuls with masters, online correspondence tournaments, and full email support for students.
  • Students may submit two games for personalized emailed analysis by our instructors. That's right! We analyze two games for each student and offer personalized tips and advice.
  • The tuition for August 2016 is $150.
  • We offer four rating sections: 900+, 1200+, 1500+, and 1750+ Elo.
  • Program begins on August 6th, 2016 at 10:00 AM PDT and all the live lessons will be taught on the 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th, and 21st of August.
  • Most live lessons are taught somewhere between 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM PDT (Pacific Time). Registered students will receive the full schedule for August by the 5th.

  • Essential tactical patterns (forks, pins, skewers, etc.) and how to use them in your games.
  • Important checkmating patterns you must know (Anastasia's mate, Max Lange's mate, Boden's mate, and more).
  • Checklist of checkmates (as well as an accompanying e-book by Dr. James Stripes to help students master these important checkmates).
  • Preparing checkmates.
  • Determining priorities on the chessboard and how to better apply chess knowledge to your own games.
  • Applying logic to fundamental strategic concepts.
  • Calculation Training.
  • Textbooks: Silman's Complete Endgame Course by Jeremy Silman and Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess by Bobby Fischer


  • Intermediate tactical crash course: must-know patterns on pins, discovered attacks, discovered checks, interference, clearance sacrifices, and deflection.
  • Identifying and appropriately reacting to forcing ideas.
  • Dynamic strategy - using threats to improve your position.
  • Properly evaluating development of the queen: prematurely developed, a liability, on the verge of being trapped, well-developed, or powerfully centralized?
  • How to refute mistimed positional play by sheer force of tactics and proper calculation.
  • Textbooks: Silman's Complete Endgame Course by Jeremy Silman and Amateur's Mind by Jeremy Silman


  • Opening repertoire for Black vs. English Opening (1.c4) and Reti Opening (1.Nf3).
  • Opening repertoire for Black vs. nonstandard openings such as 1.f4, 1.Nc3, etc.
  • The art of hunting down the opponent's king.
  • Identifying and evaluating different types of targets.
  • Creation and exploitation of targets in the middlegame and early endgame.
  • Calculation training and determining how fatal an opponent's threat is.
  • How to refute mistimed positional play by sheer force of tactics and proper calculation.
  • Textbooks: Silman's Complete Endgame Course by Jeremy Silman and How to Reassess Your Chess 4th Edition by Jeremy Silman


  • Advanced imbalances: understanding how imbalances themselves are subject to enhancing our evaluations accordingly.
  • Advanced imbalances: how to imbalance a symmetrical or otherwise equal position to create winning chances in the position.
  • Improving focus when calculating along with other thought-process tips.
  • Improving tactical thinking and decision-making (several lessons on this topic).
  • Advanced endgames: rook and pawn endgames with an extra minor piece? Must-know facts about this endgame.
  • Guidelines and precautionary measures to take before entering certain endgames such as king and pawn endgames.
  • How to refute mistimed positional play by sheer force of tactics and proper calculation.
  • Textbooks: Silman's Complete Endgame Course by Jeremy Silman and How to Reassess Your Chess 4th Edition by Jeremy Silman.



Naming of our sections is based on over-the-board Elo ratings. Online correspondence ratings tend to be inflated compared to Elo, by up to a few hundred points at lower rating levels. Please note that the Prodigy Program is now in its second semester for the year and so the classes are more advanced even though section names haven't been updated. As an example, the 1200+ section is more of a 1350+ section and the 1500+ section is effectively a 1650+ section.

Registration Deadline:

Registration for the August 2016 month of the Prodigy Program ends at 9:00 PM PDT on August 5th, 2016. This means, we must receive payment and your student information (via form) by then. We will accept late payments but late registrations won't be processed until a few days later.
