Working Class Pawns.
A few weeks ago I watched the Ginger GM talking about pawns, he names his, very interesting, very worthwhile. I seem to have gotten into a habit of chucking my pawns under the proverbial bus. I let them get stomped by Knights, thrown from the walls of the Rooks, abused by Bishops (titter) and every kind of death and abuse conceiveable short of the cradle of Judas! Well not any more and guess what? Yep, you guessed it, my game improved. (thanks ya ginger bearded wizzard).
I also learnt something new from trawling the web, during the middle ages the pawns were represented and at times depicted with real jobs and passtimes. I read this across several sites and some slight varients to the jobs existed but there was pretty much a common theme of their employ. Here is a small graphic I knocked up (for my buddy clumsyknight7), I hope like me, it will make newer players value their humble working class pawns a little more as their game progress's.
Adam = A farmer.
Brian = A Farrier (blacksmith).
Charlie = A Weaver.
David = A Businessman.
Ernie = A Doctor.
Fred = An Inkeeper.
George = A Policeman.
Harry = A Gambler.
Interesting that the central pawns have the important jobs in real life too!
I hope this was of interest.
Thanks Ginger GM, Gotham Chess, RTPaling and ClumsyKnight7.
