Hello! Chess.com Friends,

I welcome you all to the Fascinating Five Series - Tactics section. In this article, we will discuss five tactical positions with their pattern.

Pattern 1: Windmill tactical motif

The above position is said to be in a windmill pattern. The king will be locked and the knight with bishop or rook with bishop will try to give simultaneous checks by winning materials or delivering checkmates like the above position.
Pattern 2: Deflection/Decoy
It refers to the removal of a piece from a certain square or file so that there would be a winning advantage for the player executing the tactical motif. Now let's look into a position with the similar theme.

Pattern 3 : Smothered Mate
Pattern 4 : Alekhine's Gun

Pattern 5 : Damiano's Mate

Damiano's mate has the opponent king restricted on the back rank by an attacking pawn, while the queen delivers mate with support from the pawn, and an opponent piece blocks horizontal escape on the opposite side to which the queen is checking.
And that's it for today. I hope you have learned some basics about chess checkmates and basic mating patterns. I also wish you all good luck with your chess and career.
Thankyou everyone! See you all later with a new article to share.
