Caro-Kann Defense: Advance Variation
I'm sure you've heard of the Caro-Kann, but have you heard of the advance variation?
Caro-Kann Defense: Advance Variation - I personally have played this many times, both as black and white. This move restricts space, and basically annoys the hell out of black. the only move that can remove this space pressing pawn (immediately, but there are other options to remove it in midgame) is f6, a move that opens a whole on the king side, which can be exploited to a later extent, if black chooses to castle kingside (the queenside castle doesn't exactly look appealing). I prefer to not trade, as that gives black a lead in development(when they should be down), with nxf6. I believe that a better option is to play nf3. obviously, I am not an expert, and if they take, you have gained a pretty solid stronghold with your knight in the middle of the opponents territory. They may try another move: bg4, pinning the knight. you simply respond with be2, unpinning the knight, and if they try to take the knight, you will take their bishop, making a relatively equal trade in my eyes, where have the bishop pair, and they have an extra pawn. not only that, but the hole in f7 is still there, leading to potential problems in the endgame for black.
On the other hand, Black could create counterplay, by developing. despite being limited by the pawn sitting on the e5 square, there could be potential in attacking the base, instead of the front. the base is protected by the queen, but after its lone defender falls, the pawn can be quickly picked up and the whole chain goes ka-boom.
Please not that I am only 800 rated as of this writing- My information may not be entirely accurate, but contains some good ideas
