Fishing Pole Trap

The Fishing Pole Trap is a trap played by Black to checkmate White in 9 moves. This trap mainly revolves around the Ruy Lopez opening. If you play this trap on your friends, they will think you are a genius. You cannot afford to miss this trap.

This is the Ruy Lopez opening. We will now start the trap.

After Nf6, White castles kingside

We will now play Ng4. This is where the trap starts

After we play Ng4, White will play h3, hoping to kick off the knight. This is exactly what we wanted.

Black will now play h5, turning it into the Fishing pole structure.

White will now think we blundered and happily capture our knight, hoping to undermine Black's position.

But, alas, White fell for our trap. We will now recapture with the h-pawn, opening a line for our h8 rook to attack the castled king.

White will now play Ne1, hoping to save his knight. We will now play Qh4, threatening Qh2# on the next move

White now recognizes the checkmate threat and plays f3, hoping to have a square to flee away to.

Now, Black will play g3, to cut off White's options to flee.

White will now play d4, as there is nothing else he can do. Black will now play Qh2#. Let us now see the whole trap put together

You saw that White made a lot of blunders. The major blunder here was 6.hxg4. It might look like an excellent move to the untrained eye, getting a piece for free. Black utilizes this blunder to checkmate White in another 3 moves. After 8. f3, g3, you can see that regardless of what White plays now, he can checkmate in the next move. You can play this trap on lower rated players, if they have not seen the trap before. You can play this trap in your bullet and blitz games, online or in-person. I have had this trap played on me in many online games. If you want to prevent the trap as White, do not push the h2 pawn to attack the knight, as your king has tucked into safety behind the f2, g2 and h2 pawns. Do not push these valuable pawns ahead. I hope you all liked this blog post. Try this trap whenever possible on your opponents.
P.S- This is my first blog post, I really appreciate your honest feedback
