Story Of A 'Cooked' Problem

Story Of A 'Cooked' Problem

Hey chess family!

After the great response for my previous puzzle, I'm sharing another endgame study - but this one has a twist!

This endgame study was composed by Fritz in 1963 (in Shakhmaty v SSSR #18), but it has a 'cook'! That means that the study was initially 'White to play and draw', but later analysis showed that Black can, in fact, win with best play!

Let's see if you can find the 'cook' and get your Michelin 3-stars on the chess board!

One of my good friends, Michael Anderson, has shared with me several times about the curious phenomenon, where a 'mistake' over the board actually leads to a better outcome than the best move, after the opponent makes a bigger mistake in reply!

That's a good parable for life, too. It's through putting ourselves out there more, showing up more boldly - and accepting that this means making mistakes along the way - that we learn and grow more rapidly.
To quote Niels Bohr,

“An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field.”

So, the next time you mess up - instead of beating yourself up over it, ask 'What can I learn from it?'

Here too, we see how a 'flaw' in the original endgame study led to a very worthwhile and instructive puzzle in its own right!

See you next time with my next fun exercise for you!
