And it stopped me in taking the key step from 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠/𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 to 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧/𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - and subsequently, getting 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴 in the real world.⁣

However, when it did all finally 'click' for me, the results came very fast...⁣

Let me share three of my most profound experiences pertaining to this question of 'timing'.⁣

In 2007, I stopped playing junior tournaments and the King's Indian Defence as Black, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐦𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐨.⁣

I 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐅𝐈𝐃𝐄 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 in the 6 months after that.⁣

In 2012, I 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥, even though most of the Australian chess community told me at the time that I 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘢 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩 at the same time.⁣

I proved them wrong, 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐌 𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 (and even doing some writing on the side!)⁣

In late 2018, I booked a flight to Vietnam to meet my new girlfriend, even though my parents told me to 𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 and find a woman that lived within 30 minutes of me.⁣

𝐈 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟗, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐞'𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲. ⁣

You're going to 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦, the opportunities that 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, but which you 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧, until it was 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦.⁣
