My Journey To Chess Mastery
Although I am a Grandmaster now, my journey to chess mastery was far from easy and linear.
My difficult childhood (which includes illness in the family since I was 5-6 years old) pushed me to create and maximize my own opportunities for playing important tournaments and improving my chess. I still remember being stuck at the 1800 rating for two years, until learning from new mentors and changing my whole approach to training took my play to a whole new level.
Like you, I wasn’t born with amazing chess ability – I had to work very hard and consistently to develop my skills and overcome the struggles and disappointments.
Although I was relatively slow to improve as a junior (only becoming a FIDE Master at 17 years of age), I made up for it by totally committing to my dream of becoming a Grandmaster as an adult, and indeed, I became an International Master at 19 years of age, and a Grandmaster just over three years later.
I’m one of the few Grandmasters in the world who had to fund my journey to the GM title through coaching a lot of students, and if I can do it from Australia (very far from the big chess tournaments in Europe or USA), you can too, wherever in the world you are!
