Celebrating Gamer Month: Chess, a Tribute to the Gaming Industry

Each August 29th since 2008, Gamer Day is celebrated, a date that recognizes the growing importance of video games in our society. This day not only celebrates the millions of people who enjoy video games and chess as a form of entertainment, but also those who have made video games their career, whether as developers, critics, streamers, or professional competitors.

The celebration of Gamer Day is a testament to the impact video games have had on our society and how they have evolved from being a form of fringe entertainment to becoming an integral part of our global culture. From the days of arcade games to the complex virtual worlds of today, video games have come a long way.

World Gamer Day is celebrated on August 29th as an initiative of several video game magazines in Europe, in honor of the launch of the “Tetris” video game franchise in 1984, a game that has become an internationally recognized cultural icon. Tetris not only showed the creativity and potential of video games, but it also helped establish video games as a legitimate form of entertainment. In 1985, Mario Bros. was added, which has been instrumental in the evolution of video games and their global popularity.

Chess, like many video games, is a game of strategy, concentration and skill, as well as being the ultimate mental sport. Both worlds share a passionate and dedicated community. As we  celebrate Gamer Month, we also highlight how chess has influenced the creation of strategy video games and how the two can complement each other to offer an enriching gaming experience.


At our club, we have decided to extend the celebration and declare August as Gamer Month with regular, themed chess events, and we will be playing a Match Series of daily games with some of the most prominent chess streamers in the world.

All of them marked by #Gamer, using the same annual wallpaper during the month ("241 Countries and Regions of the World of Chess" by Pablo Picasso) and a personalized one for Gamer Day.
