We all are familiar with the most important quote of chess by François-André Danican Philidor.

Pawns sit on the second and seventh rank in the starting position of chess. Most of the times the pawn structure determines the piece play for both sides .The positioning of the pawns is what usually dictates the types of plans available in a given position due to open files, space, pawn weaknesses, etc.". In general both players try to develop pieces as well as pawns in order to gain a certain goals

  • control over center squares
  • gaining space
  • creating pass pawns
  • restricting opponents pieces
  • trying to get fast development in the opening
  • safe house for king

Pawns when together are great .They help each other and help their king to achieve their goal, But if they are alone ,with various beasts  looking to attack it .This  situation is often seen in isolated queens pawn also known as (IQP) where it doesn't mean it is a weakness itself but the player does against it or with it determines its value even more.
