Morning, how are you? I'm doing great, thanks for asking. I'm pumped right now and I haven't even had my coffee. Why, you ask? Well you see I played my first chess game of the day, and it was amazing. I controlled the entire game. Originally today's analysis was meant to be a match I played yesterday, but I want to discuss the ideas I had in my head for this game while it's REALLY fresh. Let's check it out.

(and I won't be making my opponents anonymous like in the first blogpost. Too much hassle.)

So, we start with Caro Kann Defense 1.e4 c6 however my opponent plays 2.Qh5 After looking at the game, my suspicion is that they don't have an appropriate response to the CKD. Anyway, g6 of course trying to punish the early queen. 3.Qg5 trying to keep pressure on my kingside but I'm not here for it Bh6 4.Qe5 f6 5.Qc3 e5 here I have a funny thought. The situation looked a bit like Hikaru's constant pawn push in his recent Disrespect Speedrun 6.g3 d5 7.Bg2 this was not good in my opinion, and I proved it immediately with d4. The bishop is now a bit constricted. Sure you can play Bf1 to try another route, but that would be too slow.

8.Qd3 c5 preparing a square for my knight 9.c4 to try and attract en passant? I'm actually not sure what that move was for. Seems useless, so I just ignore it. I play Nc6 as planned. 10.a3 prevents Nb4 but blocks your own knight from developing. Which could have been prevented if they didn't play 9.c4. So I reroute with Na5 looking to fork the rook and bishop if the opponents queen ever stops watching the b3 square.

11.Ne2 Bd7 attempting to take control of the b3 square by force. 12.h4 insanely passive. Ba4 getting my wish for the b3 square. 13.Qf3 Qd6 looking to castle long. I saw that the pieces were getting heavy on the kingside, plus I had a lot of initiative on the queenside. 14.d3 Bxc1 15.Nxc1 Nb3 choosing to exchange because my knight felt like it lost a lot of its previous momentum. 16.Nxb3 Bxb3

17.O-O I don't think this was a good move by white. Reason being that there wasn't much threat to the king at that point. The center was closed and finding checks would have taken too much time from me. Castling short like that just pushed the king into the fray. O-O-O bringing my rook into the game.

18.Nd2 Bc2 apparently I'm worse here but I can't really see it. I'll take a look through game review later. 19.Bh3+ Kb8 20.Kh2 once again, not sure why that was chosen. Wastes time that the opponent finally managed to get back. Rf8

Now to look at what made me so happy today. 21.Rac1 Ba4 22. b3 Bd7 23. Bxd7 Qxd7 24. g4 f5 25. gxf5 gxf5 26. exf5 Rxf5 27. Qe4 Nf6 All of this was calculated. Then to make this even better.

28.Qg2 Rg8 29. Qh3 Ng4+ 30. Kg3 Nxf2+ 31. Kh2 Nxh3 32. Kxh3 Rxf1+ 33. Kh2 Rxc1 34.
Ne4 Rc2+ 35. Kh1 Qg4 36. Nxc5 Qg2# ALL of this was calculated too!!!! (I split them up since they were 2 different calculations). I mean I missed M1 but this is still really impressive.

Wow, what a great way to start the morning. I ruled the board. I don't have anything to really criticise about my moves this time around, so I'll leave it at that. If you think there was anything could've done better, do share. See you in a couple of hours.

Announcements:

  • I intend to post the previously planned analysis later today.
  • This was my first time analysing without the chess.com analysis so I don't know what was actually a blunder or great move. If you care, you can find the match by yourself.
  • I was invited to (and joined) two clubs. So thanks to Fire from BlogChamps for the invite, and thanks to ChessPawn921 from The Chess Special Forces as well. Special thanks to Lightning from BlogChamps for being so welcoming.
  • I would like to change one of my goals from the first blogpost. I originally said that in order to practice better calculation I should think for 30 sec before moves. That's unrealistic. I don't have that type of patience and taking 30 seconds to make obvious moves might even put me on chess.com's cheating radar.
  • Friday is gonna be a bit special. I suggest that, even if you don't come back for the rest of the week, you at least check out Friday's post.
  • I'm wondering if I should colour the piece names. I'm also considering capitalising them. My concern is that I might be inconsistent in the capitalisation.
  • Does anyone know where I can find a tutorial for making puzzles?
  • I'm thinking of analysing some GM games. I think it'll improve my understanding of the game, and let me see better reactions to situations I have encountered, or will encounter.
