The Closed Catalan Opening | Converting a Winning Position

This is a game recap of my (2225 USCF) game against Kevin Gaustad (1800 USCF) from round 4 of 4 in a local OTB tournament. The time control was 60+30 and had about 10 players in the section.

Kevin and I have played numerous times in the Closed Catalan Opening, and this battle is a continuation of that series. I had trouble converting good positions, and Kevin did a nice job fighting for counterplay. I've been trying to work on finding good takeaways from my games, and this tournament helped highlight things I need to work on!

  1. Calculation Accuracy
  2. Speed of Calculation & Time Management
  3. Late Opening to Early Middlegame Plans

Game PGN:

A simple two-step method to improve at chess:

  1. Play a lot of games (Chess.com and OTB)
  2. Review each game for takeaways to improve on

If you want to take it a step further, log your takeaways in a spreadsheet or notebook and look for trends over time. Being able to think about these takeaways in future games will help your chess improvement.

Please let me know what you think of this format. Good luck in your games and with your chess improvement!
