Welcome to the first blog of The Punkin! Today, we will be talking about offbeat openings. I had a lot of trouble with Offbeat Openings. I lost many games to trash openings. So, without further ado, let's dive into the openings!
Alekhine's Defense
The Alekhine's Defense, named after Grandmaster Alexander Alekhine, is an opening starting with the king's knight. Alekhine's Defense is not really good, but most people do not know how to deal with it. This game shows what you should do:
This lesser-known opening can catch players off guard, but you can easily counter it effectively if you understand the appropriate strategies to employ against it. The opening allows White to get the center, just like the next opening.
The Pirc
The Pirc, named after Slovenian Grandmaster Vasja Pirc, starts like this:
As a hypermodern opening, the Pirc lets White take the center and then uses fianchetto bishops to attack and neutralize the center. We want to castle queenside and launch our pawns to quickly storm the kingside before they try to break the center.
The Nimzowitsch Defense
Lastly, we have the Nimzowitsch. Named after Grandmaster Aron Nimzowitsch, it is an opening starting with the queen's knight. It was created in the early twentieth century and gained popularity over the years.
Sometimes, Black can be aggressive and castle queenside. We need to be ready for it and make sure we reach their king first!
That's all for this blog, and I hope you enjoyed it! Part two is out!
