I am reading How to Beat Your Dad at Chess by Murray Chandler. I am blogging to create supporting puzzles in studying the content.

It takes a lot of confidence to see the opportunity or create the opportunity of such an expensive sacrifices as two bishops. German World Champion Emanuel Lasker played a perfect example of the Double Bishop Sacrifice in Amsterdam 1889, studied in blog post The Double Bishop Sacrifice. This game with Bauer has been the classic model ever since.

The essential elements are:

  1. wb sacrifice on h7, followed soon afterwards by
  2. a second wb sacrifice on g7.

This removes the protective pawn shelter in front of bk. White can then attack down the g- and h-files with his major pieces. # is inevitable if both wq and wr can engage immediately.
Nonnally the white queen reaches the h-file swiftly, with a check. The critical issue is
usually the speed with which the white rook can  attack.

Herr is a typical pattern.

71)

72) From the classic Lasker-Bauer game. Here a bq sacrifice avoids mate only for wq to fork two bb's.
73) Black can take a similar approach, which white can slow with wp to f3. bq to g3 sets up for a lethal discovered check.
74) wp on g5 may seem an obstruction, but can be used while preparing for the wr lift.
