On December 27th, 2024, the world #1 and former world champion and current five-time world rapid and seven-time blitz champion GM Magnus Carlsen has been disqualified from the 2024 FIDE World Rapid Championship in New York for violating FIDE's dress code. He wore the wrong clothes for a FIDE tournament. Carlsen received a fine of $200 and a warning by the International Chess Federation to change his clothes or be disqualified. He was wearing jeans during the tournament. He refused to change his clothes. Chief Arbiter Alex Holowczak to change his dress after the eighth round. He won't be paired for round 9. He could play in round 10. Carlsen told the chess channel "Take Take Take" that he was at a lunch meeting that he didn't have to think about changing his dresses. He said that he will change tomorrow. He wore jeans twice consecutively. The arbiters said that he had to change right now. He decided to withdraw from the World Rapid Championship. He finishes the tournament with a 5/8 score. He won't be playing He refused to defend his world rapid champion title. He also chose not to participate in the World Blitz Championship from December 28-December 30 2024. He also refused to defend his world blitz champion title.
