Untitled Tuesday 7/7/2020 - The best tournament of my life?

For those of you who don't know, Untitled Tuesday is a parody of Titled Tuesday (recently rebranded to the Speed Chess Championship Grand Prix), a now weekly blitz tournament with cash prizes for titled players. Untitled Tuesday, however, is a tournament with the same format (10 rounds of 3+1 blitz), with no prizes, and no titled players allowed. This week, I participated in the tournament for the first time in a while. I finished 7.5/10, netting 31 rating points, which would normally earn 2nd or 3rd place. This week, it was only enough for 4th place, unfortunately. The final standings can be viewed here

And now, on to the games

EDIT: The 2nd place finisher just got banned for FPV, that means I get 3rd

yay

In the first round, I got a huge advantage out of the opening, and my opponent chose to just not play on

In the second round, I faced @qalimz, a 1300 rated player who played well in the endgame after blundering in the opening

In round 3, I suffered a tough loss against @Lord_Hammer, making a positional blunder early on
In the fourth round, I faced @FizzyBand, getting into a slightly better endgame, then blundering a knight 😒
Coming off of back-to-back losses, I really couldn't afford losing again if I wanted to finish the tournament with a decent score. I managed to get another win, this time against @Stephenwilly
In the 6th round, I played against @sapphireglacier. It was an interesting game in which I was able to convert the two pawns he sacrificed
In the 7th round, I got a clean opening win over @championps
At this point I was very streaky during the tournament, having won rounds 1-2, lost rounds 3-4, and then won rounds 5-7, giving me a 5/7 score going into the 8th round. 5/7 was by far my best score ever after 7 rounds, a few months ago I'd be happy finishing 5.5/10. My mindset at this point was to just go 1/3, finish with a solid 6/10. I did much better, of course
I managed to convert vs @TheCosmicWave in a dubious opening sacrifice, putting me at 6/8!
In the final round, there were many possibilities with the standings. The standings were as follows:
  1. @SavoryMcMuffin (7.5)
  2. @pe_de_limao03 (7.5)
  3. Me (7)
  4. @pineapplepro123 (6.5)
I could have been paired with the eventual winner, and had I won I would have a chance to win the entire event. Instead, I got paired with @pe_de_limao03, and managed to draw the game after blundering the advantage
Overall I can't really complain, if before the tournament you told me I'd finish with 7.5/10 and a draw against a 2200, I'd certainly take it. So it's not that bad. Just very frustrating that I didn't get 3rd, when 7.5/10 usually gets 2nd or 3rd. This is also by far my best finish (Unless you count the August event from 2018 where the server crashed after round 7 and almost everyone got kicked out of the tournament automatically), so I guess I'll have to call it a good run

Also, I just have to put this quote in here
