Does Abasov look like he can win the Candidates in the future?
The once in a year candidates tournament decides who to play the reining world chess champion. Last year we saw Magnus Carlson decide not to defend his throne giving Ding Liren the chance at the title which saw victory for Ding. Carlson decided this year to not participate in candidates.
This decision gave the Fide World Cup 4th place, Abasov a chance to play in the candidates. Abasov is in for a tough time this year. However if he keeps up this performance I believe he will be a winner in the future. If you are interested watch Abasov give Magnus a BIG scare!
This blog is not for answering any questions. Instead it should be a place to discuss the Candidates.
Player performances by the end of round 2 are as followed
Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu - 0.5(loss to Gukesh + Draw with Alireza)
Alireza Firouzja - 0.5(loss to Ian + Draw with Praggnanandhaa)
Nijat Abasov - 0.5(Loss to Fabiano + Draw with Ian)
Hikaru Nakamura - 0.5(Loss to Vidit + Draw with Fabiano)
