There are many openings to chose from! From the Queens Gambit, all the way down to the Italian Game! And you might want some variety in your opening-repertoire, after all, you won't want to play the same opening over and over again for a few hundred times, especially during the pandemic! So here it is: Top 5 Incredible Chess Openings To Play During COVID!

It's the pandemic... we're all stuck at home. A lot of us are playing chess! What openings should we play? What traps can we make? Can we fool our opponents?

Oh well... believe it or not, the answer to all of those is a YES! Lets take a look at the first opening underway!

The Scotch Gambit

This is my absolute favorite opening! You can never get enough of it! About 6 months ago, my coach showed me this opening, and I loved it! And the best part is... you can win easily, and fast! Plus, lots of your opponents will come unprepared against this opening, and they will surely be surprised when you play it! Lets take a look at a popular line, and how you can win a piece!

Cool right? I fooled many of my opponents with this trap, and maybe you will be able to! Another line of the Scotch Gambit is easily winning for white, just not right away. White prevents black from castling, and gets a clear winning plan:

As shown, white is doing great, if not winning. Lets dive into the last popular line of the Scotch  Gambit, the line that most high-rated players chose:

And so, that was the Scotch Gambit. I guess you can tell why I like it so much! tongue.png

On a serious note though, the Scotch Gambit is actually a really good opening that has many traps! I would recommend it to all levels of chess!

The Zukerkort

Most of you probably never heard of this opening, because it isn't as popular as the others. But it's extremely well fitting for someone who wants to play 1.d4! With stuff like The Greek Gift, queen sacrifices, and more, you will never get bored playing it! So here's how it goes:

Lets look at a tactic that popped up in one of my games! (I was playing black) Where my opponent found a great move that led me to a losing position!

Yep! My opponent pretty much crushed me! But nonetheless, I learned that his opening choice was great! And that is exactly why I decided to show this opening to you, and you're reading it right now! happy.png

Okay! We completed this opening! Phew! I really don't like to look at my losses! Lets move on!

The French Defense

Look, I'm sorry Caro-Kann lovers! I just like the French more! Nothing to it! It leads to great and solid positions, and makes it hard for white to play! I already wrote a blog about the French Defense, white can be found here. Lets just take a quick dive into one of my favorite lines for black:

This in-particular line is called the Advance Variation, which I like to play against for 1 reason: Targeting white's advanced pawns! Winning more pawns is always much fun!

Alright, we can get back to this later, for now, we will move on to the next opening!

The Nimzo Larsen Attack

The Nimzo Larsen attack is quite simple and formal. People who like solid position, are recommended to play this opening! A pretty interesting opening, if you ask me. Lets see a popular line, where black plays 1..d5, a move played at all levels:

Hikaru demonstrates the greatness of this opening on his stream. It's pretty much his favorite opening, also most-played! This shows that the Nimzo can be played on Super-Grandmaster level, and even on regular 100 level! I play it a lot, and it's really recommended!

And finally... to end it all... the Queens Gambit!

The Queens Gambit is probably the most popular chess-opening of all time! Most chess grandmasters prefer to play it! If you don't know what this opening is (or don't know well), this may be educational! Lets look at the formal Queens-Gambit-Setup:

Here, white has many choices. Black can't really take the pawn, the such will lead to a lack of space for black. Here is black's most common/best line, and how white can play against it:

Another popular line for black is called the "Semi-Slav Defense." A line that I formally don't play, but lots of others do!

Those lines were definitely the most popular of all, but there are many others, so you can take some opening courses if interested!

The Queens Gambit is in-fact so popular that there is a TV Show named after it, called the Queens Gambit! Featuring the main character... Beth Harmon! I guess she will be happy if you play the queens gambit! tongue.png

Oh well... I guess it's time to head to the outro.
