Pawn advance

Pawn advance

The situation of our pawns shows how much territory, space we have. If we gain space, then our pieces will have more room to maneuver or change directions quickly.

When we have more pawns in one part of the board, there we want to advance the pawns to create a passed pawn to force the opponent to sacrifice a piece for it.

In my game today I played against an Indian player, who played the old Indian defense with Bf5, an unusual, but solid idea. He allowed me to capture his bishop on g6 and he surprised me by capturing back on g6 with the f-pawn.

I got the pair of bishops and a better pawn structure. My plan was to exchange pawns to open the position for my bishops and try to create a passed pawn which I can advance.

Later my advanced passed pawn created a fantastic outpost for my knight on d6. When my opponent captured the d6 knight, I recaptured with the c-pawn to create connected passed pawns, which were unstoppable:

I wish you enjoyed the game and gained some new ideas which you can use in your future games!
