Wilhelm Steinitz was the first official world champion. He was born on May 17, 1836. He learned chess at the age of 12, and rapidly improved, winning the Vienna Championship in 1861. After this he beat many of the world's top players, such as Blackburne and Mongredien. He became world champion after defeating Anderssen in a match 8-6.

His style was at first like many of his peers, tactical and aggresive. However, in the early 1870s, his style turned into a positional one. People called his play "cowardly". That did not stop him from winning, though, and he was world champion up until 1894.

The following game was played in 1895, and was a brilliant attack by Steinitz.
