# Today's (And Yesterday's) Daily Puzzle 8-6-20: Clearing, Decoying, and Smothering. All In One Move!

7

What a puzzle today! Both sides' kings seem to be relatively in danger. White has a powerful rook duo on the 7th rank but can't black provide his own pressure on the light squares against white's king? Don't forget white's bishop is currently hanging too. It shouldn't take much time to see that there seems to be two candidate moves for today's puzzle that stand out:

1. Be5. Getting out of the way of the pawn's threat while also putting serious pressure on g7

2. Rxg7. Clearing the way for the queen to move to the 7th if needed and/or also threatening some tricky tactics with Rxh7.

What to do next? Calculate!

From my amateurish perspective, I found the Rg8 move to be just brilliant. It achieves so much: it clears the way for white's queen to deliver check and it decoys black's rook to smother himself for a great mate all in one move! You know my mantra: always calculate all checks or else you might miss great moves like these.

Yesterday's Daily Puzzle

As I didn't post yesterday, I'll leave the below solution for the reader to enjoy with minimal comments. The solution is quite appropriate given today's puzzle as there's another decoy:
