Today's Daily Puzzle 8/11/20: Wait, The King Is Where?
Hello Puzzlers!
When first looking at today's daily puzzle it's impossible not to notice the extremely exposed position of the king. Pro tip: in middlegames kings usually don't belong on e4 . So, although black's bishop is hanging and it's very tempting to take, it's almost our duty as citizens of the chess world to calculate the possibility of forcing a checkmate. Don't be near-sighted and greedy by just snapping up material!
After solving the puzzle and learning this came from a real game in 1992 between Smyslov and Lembit Oll, an Estonian grandmaster, I had to look at the game and find out how exactly the king ended up on e4. The game is attached at the very bottom if interested but the position I found to be most interesting was actually one move before the puzzle we see here:
What a great move!
