Well after missing several games for the team, I was finally available for this dead rubber match , last game of the season to decide if we could finish 5th instead 6th only a 5-0 victory would achieve this. Well it certainly felt like there was nothing at stake as Iarrived afew minutes late ,everybody else had kicked off but Francis had waited for me and it wasn't long before the top 3 board games had all taken a distint direction, much to my dismay I found myself captive by Adrians game on board 1 playing the experienced David Everington who was very much on the front foot and handing out a lesson in the game. He was very aware of Adrians opening had pulled out an old line that unfortunately Adrian had no idea about and fell into the losing line (he was in good company as David later explained Korchnoi also chose Adrians line). I myself had once again got in a total mess against Francis playing his Scandinavian ,so was doing anything thing I could not to lose. However on 3 Glyn was the opposite he was very quickly into an endgame 2 pawns up. The battles on 4 and 5 at this point seemed pretty pointless Steve seemed to have a slight edge and Gary was drawish. It was Glyn that was first to finish 1-0 not even 8 oclock but a look to my right and David was literally torturing Adrian. I myself was just literally baffled once more by my posistion for the second time this season against Francis, but when he traded queens I cheekily offered the draw I felt I was losing but once Francis looked at the other games he said you know queens off doesn't end the game, then stuck his hand out, maybe more out of pity im not sure but I was pleased to walk away with the draw. Not even 8:30 and Adrian too had finished although he had fought on there was no stopping David tonight 1.5-1.5 Steve's advantage had not only gone but flipped around and he too was happy enough with the draw that just left Gary playing for honour and indeed this game was heading into a time scramble which Gary was able to win. Although we won the match on the night still left us finishing the season one place above relegation and overall a very dissapointing season.
