People are afraid to play gambits for the irrational fear that opponents can follow master analysis until the book says they're on the verge of equality or maybe even a plus (depending on the gambit's riskiness).

It's nonsense, because when inexpert players have to find their own moves — whether at the 2nd turn or the 20th — they play poorly enough to ensure that the gambit player always has practical chances.

At Chess960, the players are thinking on their own immediately, which favors the bold and principled.
