During 28.12.1937 - 06.01.1938 the 18th established Hastings Christmas Tournament took place. Samuel Reshevsky won at the end with the slight difference of ½ of a point. While a particularity of this tournament was that the first five of the final rating were all tied in the between games. And Vladas Mikenas had not a single draw!

"Dr. Alekhine was present at the Hastings Tournament as a spectator and not as a player (man bites dog!)... he brought along an enormous cake with the final position of the 25th game of the recent Championship Match modeled on the icing... sounds like an attractive position for post-adjournment analysis!"happy.png

#1 game

Firstly a jewel by Vladas Mikenas in round 7. An early king's activity. Comments by Euwe, maybe long but deserve a try... in any case just check it on autopilot.

#2 game~puzzle

In the same round 7  Theodore Tylor  faced Conel Hugh O'Donel Alexander. Alexander won in a beautiful game. Although in an endgame position he missed a mate in 6, with all white's desperate moves. Can you find it?

... and the game with comments again by Euwe, really shorter this time.

#3 game~puzzle

In round 5 Reshevsky won sir G. A. Thomas in a 31-move miniature. Here's a nice tactic of the game towards the end. Black has just played 25... Bxg2

#4 game~puzzle

Black's move is always on the 2-3 first engine choices. Mikenas' not, just trying to counter attack..

Salo Landau

Salo Landau [in wiki], then current Dutch champion, participated in Hastings first reserves group and won.
