Hey guys ,

Welcome  to my article , In this article I will show you lines to play from black against d4. First we have to understand the ideas of white if he plays d4 ,then only we can refute them .

This is a common structure , In this white wants to take the center and go for slow attacks.

This  blog will contain idea against Queen's gambit and London kind of structures .

Let's start:

1. Queen's gambit declined

The first variation ,simplest to learn ,can be useful against anyone ,a good variation if you want to play for a draw.

It is a solid line with no fancy attack, I would recommend this to you if you like to go into endgame and then win from there .

2. King's Indian Defence : The other opening on the  line is Bobby Fischer's favorite.
This is an attacking line, in this you allow white to take center and go for a devastating attack on king side with pawn breaks and piece sacs, White will try to attack on queen side .
Recommended for : Players who want to build slow attacks and go for king
Players to follow for this opening:
  1. Gary Kasparov
  2. Adhiban Baskaran
  3. Bobby Fischer
  4. Teimour Radjabov

3. Grunfeld defense- An opening played by Gary Kasparov .

In this opening you give center to white but you get a good structure and a good dark  squared bishop

Recommended for : People who like to push in endgames and like dynamic structures.
Players to follow :
  1. Gary Kasparov
  2. Alexy Shirov
  3. Anatoly Karpov
  4. Magnus Carlsen
  5. Vishy Anand

4. Benoni defense and Benko gambit

I already have an article on benoni defence click here to read the article .So in this I will only focus on benko gambit.

Benko Gambit- It is a continuation line in benoni opening , it is a sharp line, in this opening you sacrifice a pawn in order to get an open file to attack and a dynamic pawn structure.

Recommended for : Players who love imbalanced and challenging positions.
Players to follow :
  1. Bobby Fischer
  2. Tigran Petrosian
  3. Mikhail Tal

5.Against London system :

To understand ideas behind london system click here .

Against London, structures like Kings Indian Defence can be effective ,but line I recommend is :

6. Nimzo Indian /Bogo Indian and Queen's Indian  -

Nimzo Indian is one of mostly played opening against d4, it is played by legendary players like vishy anand .  In this opening you give up your dark squared bishop for a bad pawn structure of your opponent .
Queen's Indian is also a good sub-line of the opening, These openings have been played by many World champions since Capablanca
Players to follow :
  1. Vishy Anand
  2. Magnus Carlsen
  3. Levon Aronian

6.Ragozin Defense
This opening can be reached by many variations , this can be said as a combination of queen's gambit declined and nimzo indian defence.
Players to follow :
  1. Vidit Gujrathi
  2. Hou Yifan
  3. Alexey Dreev

7 A Sneaky Trap :
This trap is knows as Englund gambit . I won't recommend you to play this trap in longer time controls but in bullet and hyperbullet games this is highly successful .
My advice if you are white and face this trap simply take the pawn and develop your pieces.
