You have probably heard of the chess adage, 'Put your rooks on open files', but like any well meaning piece of advice it only tells half the story for chess is far too dynamic a game to be held in such simplistic terms.  Other factors influencing the control and occupation of an open file include, the position of the king, the activity of minor pieces, available outposts and development of the chessmen.  The video explores these themes as they relate to a game of chess and particularly the control of open files, the availability or otherwise of points of penetration (without this an open file is essentially useless) and filtering ones pieces into the opponents position via the open file and the square of penetration.
