An unusual post today - probably more interesting to students of engineering and technology history than to those who study chess history. Also, a lot of text, and very little chess - the opposite of what I would normally do.

Been off work ill for a couple of days, so have had a dig through the old 'Bell's Life in London' columns of George Walker. One interesting one led me to do some more digging - in the British Newspaper Archives, as well as Staunton's 'The Chess Player's Chronicle'.

No attempt to put everything into perspective here, just the contemporary look at chess meeting one of the wonders of the age, and a few well known pictures of some of those you will find named thrown in along the way.

Also the game itself, to which I have added Staunton's comments from C.P.C. ( Walker has a couple of quick comments in Bell's Life that I forgot to add!!)

So, something a little different, and a long read, but I rather enjoyed this little glimpse into the past.

And finally to the game.
