Fischer - Gligoric. Some Games From A Friendly Rivalry.

Afternoon! I said last time that the games between Gligoric and Fischer would be an interesting article in themselves. At the time of the Fischer - Spassky match of 1972, their score was Fischer 6, Gligoric 4, with 6 draws. They later played a training match in 1992, which is not particularly relevant.

The two were clearly good friends, but at the chess board they fought each other to a standstill!

All the games are great fights. so how to choose which to give here??

O.K. Gligoric chose two for the Informator book quoted last time, and Fischer gave 4 games in 'My 60 Memorable Games'. So the 2 Gligoric choices, the two wins chosen by Fischer, and one of the draws. As a bonus, will throw in one game from the training match, just because it has an incredible position that sticks in my head. No bank of photos today - no time - just the chess. Hopefully you will be inspired to look at all the games between the two. In chronological order with brief notes -apart from the first one ( as a Dragon player I am allowed to indulge myself!!)

Fischer - Olafsson Bled 1961. Griffin.
Quick correction after the fact to a note in the next game - was on memory ( always a mistake in my case) I think they had 4 games with Gligoric as White in the Najdorf.

Personally, I would not have chosen this next game myself - but who am I to argue with Fischer's own choices! A perfect game on his part, but Gligoric makes a massive blunder. Curiously, another of his losses in their games was a Ruy Lopez with a similar type of blunder and refutation.

And a quick addition from the 1992 training match, just because one position sticks in my head as really unusual. No notes - just marvel at the position created!

Portoroz 1958. A fascinating game not included here.
