Chess History: The Chess Board
A petroglyph is an image created by removing part of a rock surface by incising, picking, carving, or abrading, as a form of rock art. Petroglyphs go back in history to the beginning of man. A hieroglyph was a character of the ancient Egyptian writing system. Let us go back in history to Egypt. The Pharaohs had hieroglyphs explaing their lives including their great battles. It is natural for a culture then who could build great pyrmids to also build something that could enact out these battles for their Pharaohs. Since Egypt had great stone makers, the board was probably made of stone.
Why is the chess board flat and why does it have 64 squares?
The ancient people believed the Earth was FLAT. The chess board is flat and the pieces do not fall off of it. If the chessboard was a globe, all the pieces would fall off of the globe.
