The best way to Calculate in Chess

The hardest thing for manny people in chess is to calculate. To calculate in chess, is simply thinking what you next best move is. In this blog i will go through 3 easy steps to calculate in chess, that will make you improve you chess rating and knowlege.

1. Checks

In a position you should first look for checks. Even the once that looks bad! Remember that a mate attack often starts with a check! How many checks are there for white in this positon?

You're right! There are 6 checks!

But how many of those checks are good? Well, there is actually one check that has a guaranteed mate in 2. But who of them? Well, Qf7+ and Qg8+ just loses the queen in one move. Also Rd8+ loses the rook in just a move. Then there is just Ng6+, Bc5+ and Qc5+ left.

This is what could happend if we played Bc5+.

What if we played Qc5+?

White is still winning, but there is no mate if black plays nicely. But what if we played Ng6+?

Both Ng6+ and Bc5+ works, but Ng6+ is simply faster. That is why you should always look for checks. Both the ones that looks good and those who look bad.

2. Captures

If you don't have any good checks, or any checks at all, you should look for captures. And do the same here as with the checks: ''Look at all of them. Even the dumb ones''. Look at the same position as before. How many captures are there for white?

You're right! There is 1 capture for white. One singel capture.

That capture is not a good one. With Qxc6 you just lose your queen. And when you don't have any good captures, or any captures at all, you move on to step three.

3. Attacks

A attack is simply a threat that can be dangerous for your opponent. It can be a trap for example. If we look at our position that we have used before, we can see many attacks. Here you got 5 of them:

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.
