En Passant

Today we are going to learn about a special move called en passant

It's a French word but were here to talk about chess so let's get started!

The only piece that can play the move en passant is the pawn!

Yep, that's why pawns are so important but anyway, below, you can see how to play the move en passant.

As you can see, the white pawn moves all the way to the 5th rank.

Now it's black's turn. If black moves their pawn to the 5th rank in only move, then on the next turn, white can capture the black pawn by moving 1 square diagonal (towards the black pawn) but there is 1 very important rule: you can only capture en passant on the very next turn. You cannot wait.

If you are playing black, here's how you would play en passant:

And by now, you probably know what en passant is!

Make sure you don't forget this special move and if you get a chance, you might be able to use en passant in your own games sometime!
